WHAT AM I WILLING TO DO.
This was a central question in my first post. How deep am I willing to dig into my own energy and life force to bring about the shift in my life that I might crave.
It’s a loaded question. And it often depends on what story I’m telling myself in any given moment. Years ago I didn’t know I had a choice in this regard. There was a long period where I believed the story that there was something permanently wrong with me and there was nothing I could do about it – that depression was a fixture in my life. That I needed to be strong and become stronger in the face of it. I believed that I had to figure it out on my own.
But the story grew heavier and heavier until I couldn’t carry it anymore, as hard as I tried. I discovered through several support systems, and over time, that I could set that story down. And breathe with relief that something different could be possible for me. While depression is one part of my experience, it’s not fixed and it certainly isn’t all of who I am. Putting down this story left a hole and a question – who am I, if not this?
At some point a new truth emerged, a mantra I could lean on:
I am a person.
I am a person.
I am a person.
It may sound simple but it’s not. I am a person means I exist. I have life in my body. I have the whole experience of being a person inside me – the low, the high and all in between. I am a person means I don’t have to have it all figured out. In fact, I can’t. I’m imperfect and whole. No one could tell me I wasn’t a person. Not even myself.
My experience has been that truths like this are reveled to us. They stick when we are ready to believe them.
With this belief as an anchor, I became willing to stand for myself more often and in gradually new and bigger ways. I gave myself permission to ask what else is out there for me. My imagination and my heart were given permission to speak. This is a different experience of life.
As it turns out, you are a person, too.
