Just over a year ago, my husband and I spent 4 days in my parent’s summer cottage, stocked up on food and hunkered down for Tony Robbins’ Unleash the Power Within program. I sat on the couch with my notebook and furiously wrote down the nuggets that were shared. But one of the things that really stayed with me was ALL the JUMPING up and down.
In between sessions, Tony would yell at us through the zoom screen to jump, JUMP, JUMPPPP higher and harder and for way longer than you ever would want to!!! I’m talking about full bodied jumping with the arms in the air, and the yelling and the dancing. It lasted for so long. I was jumping furiously, wishing for it to end!
I felt in my body at the same time: the strong desire to stop and sit down AND the reality that I could keep going if I chose to.
I saw the choice in front of me: to lean into what’s comfortable and just take it easy or to push through my own resistance to access more energy in my body to keep going. To dig deeper into what I was willing to do.
WHAT WAS I WILLING TO DO.
Underneath this question we go deeper: Could I do it? Is it worth it? … Am I worth the effort…. (Jeez Tony, did we have to go all the way thereeee?)
Don’t get me wrong – I am ALL about taking time and space for relaxation. However I know I can be lulled into a place where easy is more seductive than pushing through.
There are definitely moments when I want to give in, sit on the couch and stop jumping. And I allow myself that at times. But when I know this choice has shifted from being self-care to self-sabotage, I remember the jumping. That MORE is possible for me IF I AM WILLING.
I have felt it in my body and I’ve seen it in my life.
The discomfort of pushing through resistance can be awful and thinking about it can be enough to keep us stuck – I know the place well. And yet the discomfort of not pushing though can be even worse. When we jump for 10 seconds more than we think we can, we start to build confidence in our bodies that we most certainly can expand and access more possibilities in our lives.
Ready to try this out?
LISTEN to the first (and only) song on my new Spotify playlist. Jump up and down as hard as you can and when you don’t think you have any more juice, go 10 seconds longer [if it’s safe!!]. If jumping isn’t in the cards for you, try this out on any task / practice that stretches you. Report back, please, in the comments below!!
