The choice that changes it all.

Let’s go on a journey together. You’ll see the one choice that can change everything and turn your dream into a reality.

*****

Meet the fictional character Lemon. Deep down, in the place only Lemon can access, she has a dream to start an orange farm. She loves oranges. In her day to day, she shows up for work at the local cafe, is polite to all the regular customers, and makes enough money to just pay the bills. In spare moments, the dream of her farm creeps in. And it is quickly met with a voice that says “It’s just not possible. You don’t know a thing about farming oranges. We can barely pay our bills let alone buy land.”

Choice 1: Believe it’s not possible

Lemon chooses to believe her inner critic. The result of believing “it’s not possible” is that she doesn’t bother working on her dream at all. She continues showing up at work and trying to do her best. Inside she feels her dream losing energy. She starts to lose energy. Sometimes she feels bitter when she sees other people making their dreams come true. Her inner critic may say things like “you’re not like those people – your dream is just not meant to be.” Putting her best foot forward each day feels hard. She enjoys some parts of her life, but there’s a sense of numbness and a feeling deep down that another way IS possible. But it’s easy to squash that feeling- she’s been doing it for quite some time.

Choice 2: Believe it’s possible, someday

Lemon hears her inner critic and chooses to follow the feeling of her dream instead. It’s a good feeling. The orange farm may not be possible TODAY, but that doesn’t mean it can never be possible. Instead she reaches for what IS possible today. She borrows a library book on farming and reads it in the evenings. She learns of a town nearby that specializes in orange farming. A few weeks later, she overhears a customer mention the name of that town. She asks the customer about it and it turns out he was born there and knows an orange farmer. Lemon asks to speak with them. Next summer, she spends every Saturday volunteering at that farm. She eats lunch with the other farmers who give her tips and encouragement. Two years later, she works full time at the farm and makes enough money to pay her bills AND save for her future farm. She is energized by her progress. It’s not always easy, but more often than not, she chooses what is possible today

I see this again and again with my coaching clients. When they courageously choose to step towards the life they want, not only do they make progress, but they are surprised by the way life presents them with opportunities they never could have planned for. The magic in acting is that it sets in motion opportunities that are only possible because that action was taken.

Sometimes we are blocked from taking action. Coaching can help identify and work with the blocks – to shift them, work around them, or use them as stepping stones. What we dream of IS POSSIBLE and beyond, when we choose to act with what is available today. It requires moving through the doubt – over and over again – and showing up for yourself. Beyond the joy of seeing progress towards a dream, the feelings of satisfaction and hope that come from choosing to believe in possibility (and in yourself) may be the greatest rewards of all.
