On stage – and easy

As a birthday present this year, my husband took me to a concert near Philadelphia. We went to see Jimmy Eat World, which was one of my favorite bands in college. It was especially exciting this time around because a) this kind of activity had been on hold with the pandemic and b) it was going to be held at a casino. I had never really been to a casino before and over the summer I shared how I really wanted to go.
We got there early to have dinner, play some slot machines, and then go to the concert. My age and inexperience shone through several times that night. First, I had no idea how to play the slot machines. We had to go to the front desk TWICE to ask how to spend money and play the games. Then, with a click of ONE button, $5 was gone because I didn’t understand how the betting worked. Second, I had no idea how to play any of the games at the tables. Little did I know that they expected you to know how to play BEFORE you sit down. Third, my husband and I did not think to bring ear plugs with us to a rock concert. Thankfully the receipt from our dinner could be rolled up and shoved in our ears to act as some kind of sound protection.
I felt out of my element many times that night – all of it memorable. But what really stayed with me was the feeling I had when one of the opening bands came on stage. We saw Spoon perform – it wasn’t the whole band so they played their songs acoustic. We didn’t need ear plugs and we had gotten there so early that we saw them from the front of the room. I got to see someone, up close and personal, sharing one of the gifts they were put on earth to share. Britt Daniel stood there and performed his music with confidence and ease. I got the feeling like he didn’t care at all what I thought of him, what anyone thought of him. He just sang. His expression poured out and filled the room.
The ease of it was astounding. It wasn’t efforting. There was no striving to be anything in particular. It just was.
Gosh. If life could be this way all the time.
I think it’s a privilege to see someone in their element like that. It makes me curious about myself – what is there inside me that wants to come out in this way.
It makes me curious about you. What is there inside YOU that is ready to come forward, with beautiful ease. I love this part of coaching. The opportunity for this to be uncovered and lived.
